My computer blue-screened while I was working on an application essay that I've been writing for nearly five hours.
I've checked the document recovery window on Word and it's not there.
I didn't save it at any point.

You may be out of luck, but on the Recent tab of the File menu, in the bottom right corner, click Recover Unsaved Documents.
That may be what you have already done; if you found nothing, then there is nothing.

Machine Throttling

• Go to the Start button.
• In the Search box, type "regedit" (without quotes) and press Enter.
• Look for the following registry key: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions".
• On the right window pane, delete the subkey: "Machine Throttling".
• Restart your system.
