Desktop automatically restarts after locking the user account and Windows Update issue

Hi,

  This problem is regarding a desktop machine.
Users usually go for a break or any meeting locking the system by pressing (Windows+L) keyboard shortcut.
The machine automatically restarts once the user tries to unlock the account by providing his password.
This causes loss of any unsaved data.
The details of the machine are as follows 

                          Hardware: it is DELL manufacture and belong to Optiplex 780 model.
                          Software :  It is running Windows  7 Professional 32-bit OS with sp1. 
                                                                                       (This is only OS information.There are also user installed software)

   We tried to update the OS by checking for Windows updates.
There was an error generated while the system is trying to search for update.The error generated is mentioned below.

     Windows could not search for new updates.An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer.
          Error(s) found:
              Code 80072EFD Windows update encountered an unknown error.
     
 Any suggestion on this is greatly helpful.Thanks in advance.
